The guests who paid attention noticed the Do Not Disturb sign before they noticed anything else. Black background, white shell flecks pressed into the material, golden lettering. “Do Not Disturb” on one side. “Please Service Room” on the other. The same silent language every hotel uses, made from something the ocean left behind. Several guests picked it up without being asked. They smelled it too.

That’s when I knew the room was working.

VIP guests arrived to find their pre-ordered Seaweed Tee waiting, then were whisked directly to the spa. The Seaweed Sisters were ready. Sea Spark was ready. Seaweed glitter makeovers - SparkUps as we call them - a proper introduction to the bio-glitter made from seaweed that returned a little joy I had surrendered years ago at Burning Man when I understood what glitter actually costs the planet. Here in the Seaweed Suite: it sparkles, it’s ocean-derived, and watching guests receive it on their skin in a hotel room made from seaweed felt like a small, complete world.

The dark walk-in wardrobe held a sampling of what algae-printed clothing actually looks like in practice. Swimsuits, t-shirts, socks, and a hotel laundry bag. All the packaging was made with seaweed and printed with algae. Most guests paused there longer than expected.

Then the tour, for those who wanted it, and most did. I walked them through the interior architectural logic of the room: which materials we swap, which coastal resources from the North and Baltic Sea region would replace the plastic and chemically coated surfaces standard in every hotel room on earth. Since our partners, the Young Alganeers, tend to focus on microalgae, we designed the Seaweed Suite with that world in mind alongside the macro. We led workshops for two student groups in the room during the event, learning an ice-dye technique using spirulina: not tie-dye exactly, more like painted sea-inspired motifs and beautiful accidental puddles of color. The sectional sofa they worked around was draped in icy blue salvaged SeaCell fabric, ice-dyed with the same spirulina, a nod to a Margiela sofa design I had admired for years. The coffee table featured two 3D printed reef structures so considered in their form they belonged in a gallery as much as the ocean. Art and coral restoration in the same object.

There was no minibar. Instead: specialty seaweed coffee packaging, single-use seaweed sachets, micro and macro algae drink mixes, seaweed straws, Rootless Daily Bites, rose dulse tea, and seaweed flakes to sprinkle on whatever you were eating.

You could hear the spirulina growing. A gentle gurgle from the fluorescent green lamp beside the large screen showing only seaweed content. Seaweed TV. The media shelf held my collection of algae books from around the world, in their original languages. The newest: The Power of Plankton, signed by Vincent Doumeizel just days before.

But the moment that stopped people was the bathroom.

The Seaweed Sisters had filled the bathtub with Knotted wrack ''Ascophyllum nodosum'' and Spiral wrack ''fucus spiralis'' hand foraged in Zeeland. Real, whole, tactile seaweed. Guests were invited to pop the bladders themselves and press the gel directly onto their skin. No instruction needed. Something instinctive took over. People went quiet in there too, in a different way than the lounge. The lounge was restful. The bathroom was connective. A reminder of where all of it, the sheets, the dye, the drinks, the glitter, the kelpons actually comes from. The ocean. The living, generous, underestimated ocean. This experience landed every time.

Most guests settled into the lounge and stayed. A calm retreat between conference sessions and busy corridors. Which meant the bedroom remained open, quiet, with a beautiful view and the blue seaweed sheets offering a cool contrast to the white linens they replaced. The spirulina-dyed jersey duvet was a crowd pleaser. The footboard held more reef structures. The headboard carried our favorite seaweed stories and the Made with L’EAUTELIER eyemask, printed with algae on recycled hotel linens.

The last visitor left just before 22h00.

And then the room was mine.

When I started researching seven years ago, I was excited to see how many seaweed cosmetics brands existed. But from a packaging standpoint? Extremely limited.

We tested glass bottles. Too heavy for long-term travel, too delicate. We tried brands with recycled content bottles, but they weren’t willing to invest in better options.

We found one company that kept their standards high, practiced what they preached, and continuously experimented and evolved. We watched them for years as they expanded, contracted, rebranded - all while hand-harvesting locally and packaging responsibly.

So how can hospitality take action?

WHY HOTELS CAN’T DELIVER

Most hotels are currently panicking.

The aesthetic of sustainability is colliding with actual legislation. On August 12, 2026 (happy birthday to me!), the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) takes effect. This is legally binding across all EU Member States.

What the industry is suddenly forced to fix:

• Single-use plastic toiletries are banned. Those tiny shampoo bottles? Done.

• Mandatory recyclability for all packaging. Mixed materials that can’t actually be recycled? Not compliant.

• Food-contact packaging with PFAS and heavy metals? Prohibited.

Most hospitality brands haven’t built supply chains to handle this. They’re scrambling to replace single-use plastics with whatever checks the compliance box, often ending up with materials that still land in a landfill.

They can’t deliver true sustainability because their entire operational model is built on disposable convenience.

WHAT WE BUILT INSTEAD

L’EAUTELIER started with questions: What species? Where is it grown? How is it harvested? Where does it get processed and how? Is it a waste byproduct? How is it packaged and shipped?

I went to factories, ateliers, and workshops to see the process, meet the team, and get a feeling for the production. Sometimes the outward ethos didn’t match reality. Other times I discovered positive impacts the company never advertised.

Our team tried many products, materials, suppliers, and prototypes. Many didn’t make it through. Packaging wasn’t compostable yet. Threads still contained polyester and elastane. Some couldn’t produce the quantities or meet price points. Sometimes creative ideas required toxic materials to execute. Some closed shop.

We didn’t test once and move on. I traveled with the products, used them in various climates and time zones. Carried them in my suitcase, my purse, my weekend bag. The ones that lasted stayed with us.

This is material traceability. Being able to say where something came from and why we chose it over the alternative.

The receptionist is busy staring at a screen. You greet them first. The first touches: key card, wifi code, menu. All wrapped in plastic.

You exit the elevator and open your door. The floors look like wood but don’t sound like it. You run your fingers over the desk. Same coating. Complimentary bottle water: free except from plastic. The bathroom has one refillable bottle, a 3-in-1 for shower and sink.

And there, mounted on the mirror, printed on foam core with plastic film and toxic glue: “Welcome to your eco-friendly stay. We won’t change your sheets unless you’re here for more than 5 days. Need a new towel? Leave it on the floor. Remember to mind your water usage!”

WTF.

Why is it so hard to find?

WHY HOTELS KEEP MISSING THE MARK

The gap between wellness marketing and wellness design.

Hotels put a yoga mat in the room and call it wellness. They market sustainability but coat every surface so it can’t be damaged, without considering what those materials do to people over time.

It’s not laziness. Hotels are stuck.

They rely on the same suppliers they’ve used for decades. Plastics and polyester stay by default. Bio-materials are too new, not validated, so procurement sees them as risky and costly. Most hotel teams don’t have expertise in sustainable interiors. And waste management? Already complicated without adding new material streams.

So they slap a refillable bottle in the bathroom, skip changing the sheets, and call it progress.

Standards for healthy interiors exist (WELL, LEED ID+C), but the industry finds them too expensive or risky to implement compared to simple operational changes. A $20 yoga mat is a much cheaper marketing win than a $2,000 lighting and air filtration upgrade.

The mini bar is still full of the same snacks. Room service has the identical menu no matter where you are on the planet. At least there’s complimentary Nespresso and Lipton tea.

WHAT WE BUILT INSTEAD

I got tired of heavy research just to find hotels that aligned with my values. The “eco-stay” filter didn’t match my standards. After living out of hotels for years, I kept finding the same gap.

Hotel rooms get renovated every 7 years on average. They don’t need materials that last forever. They need materials designed for that cycle. Materials that actually support the longevity mindset instead of working against it.

When I started researching what could do this, I kept returning to seaweed. It was already washing up on hotel beaches. It took a years to comprehend its potential.
